Is it legal to do it yourself?
New Hampshire RSA 290 clearly spells out the rights of families to conduct any and all funeral details, including care of the body, transportation, and filing necessary paperwork. We can help sort through any additional rules that apply.
Does the body have to be embalmed?
Embalming is not required in any state (except in rare and specific instances) and alternative cooling methods are sufficient for 1 to 3 days in the home or other appropriate venue. If the family chooses a direct burial or cremation, there is no need to incur refrigeration or transportation fees.

Does a minister have to perform a service?
There is no legal ministerial requirement that clergy perform a service. Families may choose to create and conduct a unique and meaningful service themselves that celebrates and honors their family member, or invite clergy to participate.
What do funerals cost?
The average modern funeral in the U.S. costs $7,323 (National Funeral Directors Association, Dec 2006) for basic non-declinable fees, embalming, other body prep, transportation, use of facilities, an average basic casket, concrete outer burial vault, and use of a hearse. This does not include a cemetery plot or opening and closing fees, cremation fees, obituaries, flowers, monuments, grave markers, musician or clergy honorariums to assist in funeral or memorial services. This cost is on the rise.
At-home funerals, direct cremations and burials, and family-directed memorials may cost a fraction of that, depending on which services the family wishes to perform itself. Families can also purchase locally made, bio-degradable caskets and urns directly from NH companies and artists, or make them themselves, at a significant cost savings.
